Scott was born in Pittsburgh, PA on April 24, 1967 and began drawing in three dimensions at age two. He graduated from Carrick and CAPA High Schools and studied painting, drawing and sculpture at Carnegie Mellon University.
Scott loved observing and sketching interesting faces. He was a deep thinker with a quick wit and imparted meaningful insights and sound advice to those close to him. He loved recounting and animating stories of his childhood in Pittsburgh and his life in Virginia, which often included road trips in his vintage rides, camping in Dolly Sods, and all manner of mischief with his family and friends. His laugh was infectious. Many counted him as a dear friend and admired the full life he shared with his wife, Carolyn, and their dog, Bailey.
Scott was gifted with the ability to recognize subtle beauty in life and in others. His vision, a unique perspective, was expressed through his art and he left a great body of work for the world to appreciate.
Regardless of any situation, Scott was able to uplift and bring out the best of those around him. Those he leaves behind will carry forward his thoughtful and gentle spirit. Scott is survived by his devoted wife Carolyn (Matous) Fertig of Arlington, his parents Elwin and Teddie Fertig of Pittsburgh, his sister Christina Fertig of Pittsburgh, and his brother and sister-in-law Todd and Michelle Fertig and niece/goddaughter, Ellis Pearl Fertig of Jersey City. He is also survived by an extended loving family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
A memorial service will be held at All Saints' Church at 3577 McClure Avenue in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday, May 10 at 2PM. A wake will follow.
Scott wished to thank everyone who gave him their love and support during his battle with cancer. Donations can be sent in his name to the American Cancer Society or your local community children’s arts program.
